Zero-Day Tracker
Common Name:
Yahoo! Webcam ActiveX
Date Disclosed:
6/6/2007
Date Patched:
6/7/2007
Vendor:
Yahoo!, Inc
Application:
Yahoo! Messenger 8.x
Description:
Two zero-day exploits have been released for a Yahoo! Webcam image upload and view utilities. These ActiveX controls are installed by default as part of the Yahoo! Messenger package.
Severity:
High
Code Execution:
Yes
Impact:
Arbitrary code execution under the context of the logged in user
ActiveX remote code execution vulnerabilities have very high impacts since the source of the malicious payload can be any site on the Internet. An even more critical problem is generated when clients are administrators on their local hosts, which would run the malicious payload with Administrator credentials.
Mitigation:
Now that a patch is released, the best form of mitigation is to install the patch from Yahoo!.
Prior to the patch, the best form of mitigation is available by kill-bitting the CLSIDs for the Yahoo! ActiveX Control (DCE2F8B1-A520-11D4-8FD0-00D0B7730277,9D39223E-AE8E-11D4-8FD3-00D0B7730277) following the directions of KB240797. This will disable calls to these ActiveX controls from web pages, thereby mitigating these specific vulnerabilities.
