Common Name:
Winamp .MP4 Code Execution

Date Disclosed:
4/30/2007

Date Patched:
5/4/2007

Vendor:
AOL Music

Application:
Winamp 5.3x

Description:
A code execution vulnerability exists within Winamp's MP4 decoding which allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code under the context of the logged in user. After a normal installation, Winamp is associated as the primary player for the .MP4 extension, thereby opening all downloaded .MP4 files within Winamp. Winamp however does not open .MP4 files embedded within websites, thereby forcing the would-be attacker to deliver the .MP4 directly to the user’s host, most likely via e-mail or website link that would require the download of the .MP4 file in order to play. This could add a level of suspicion to the exploit delivery, but since music sharing is such a common activity at home and at many workplaces, the suspicious activity might be dismissed by the end-user.

Severity:
High

Code Execution:
Yes

Impact:
Arbitrary code execution under the context of the logged in user
A media player remote code execution vulnerability has a very high impact since the source of the malicious payload can be any site on the Internet. An even more critical problem is generated when clients are administrators on their local hosts, which would run the malicious payload with Administrator credentials. Exploitation impact can vary from the reported trojan installation to full system compromise by coupling this attack with a privilege escalation vulnerability to acquire SYSTEM access.

Mitigation:
Currently no vendor-supplied patch exists for this vulnerability.

The best form of mitigation is to disassociate the .MP4 extension from with Winamp:
Right-Click on the Winamp Interface
Select 'Options -> Preferences'
Within the Winamp Preferences view, choose 'General Preferences -> File Types'
Unselect the 'MP4' associated file type
Close the Winamp Preferences window
