Zero-Day Tracker
Common Name:
Word Unspecified Exploit(4)
Date Disclosed:
2/9/2007
Date Patched:
5/8/2007
Vendor:
Microsoft
Application:
Word 2000
Word XP
Description:
An unspecified vulnerability exists within Microsoft Word 2000 which may possibly allow for a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code under the context of the logged in user. This vulnerability requires user interaction. In a web-based scenario (e-mail, Web site), a user would still have to open a file manually, as it would not be auto-opened.
This is reported by McAfee as a different vulnerability than all previous Word zero-day vulnerabilities. Microsoft has acknowledged that this vulnerability does cause a denial of service for Word, and claims that exploitability is not possible. However, without any technical details released, exploitability should not be 100% ruled out.
NOTE: This information is gathered from the references below. eEye Research is currently researching the cause of the vulnerability and will update this ZDT entry as more information becomes available.
UPDATE (2/14/2007):
The referenced vendor advisory (933052) alludes that this vulnerability affects Word 2000 as well as XP. Also, the vulnerability is not limited to a denial of service, but may also allow for code execution.
Severity:
Medium
Code Execution:
Possible
Impact:
Potential for arbitrary code execution under the context of the logged in user.
This client-side file-format vulnerability has high impact potential for targeted attacks against networks. These attacks could be used to gain sensitive information, install botnet software, as well as many other common exploitations. Although Word files are not auto-opened by most web browsers and e-mail clients, the severity of this vulnerability should not be overlooked.
Mitigation:
Since a vendor-supplied patch has been released, the best form of mitigation is to apply MS07-024.
